Jesus "Jess" Avina

Jesus “Jess” Avina Jr., 85, of Pueblo, passed away peacefully on March 16, 2023, at Memorial Hospital Central in Colorado Springs. He was preceded in death by his wife Amalia Delphine Avina; son, Stephen Wayne Avina; parents, Jesus and Conception Avina; sisters, Adeline, Julia and Constance; brothers, Pete and Nash “Butch”. Jesus is survived by his children, Jess Avina (Jean Leier) and Brian Dutton; grandchildren, Dominic (Stephanie) Dutton Anastasia and Mariya Dutton; sister, Jennie Salas; numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and friends. Jesus was born on April 8, 1937, in Pueblo, to Jesus and Conception Avina. He graduated from Centennial High School in 1955. Following graduation, Jesus enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, serving time at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, and Japan. Upon leaving the military, he worked at the Alpha Beta Packing Plant in Pueblo until its closing. He also worked at County Market over 10 years. For more than 20 years, Jesus served as a custodian at Centennial High School and was beloved by teachers, students and staff. Jesus was a passionate sports fan, especially for the Denver Broncos and Nuggets, and the Colorado Rockies. You could find him watching the games at home or at the house of any of his nephews. His enthusiasm for lotto scratch-off games was known by all who knew him. No one could scratch tickets like he could. Jesus also enjoyed occasionally traveling up to Cripple Creek for gambling and had his favorite machines at the Midnight Rose Hotel and Casino. The family of Jesus wish to extend their sincere thanks to the amazing trauma center staff at Memorial Hospital Central in Colorado Springs and to the many family and friends who gave their love and support during this difficult time. Jesus will be forever loved and deeply missed by al those left behind to cherish his memory. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Prostate Cancer Foundation, American Cancer Society, or the Memorial Hospital Foundation in Colorado Springs.
