In Loving Memory of Socorro Gaytan Socorro Gaytan was born on November 27, 1932, in Hacienda de Bañon, Villa de Cos, Zacatecas, Mexico. She was the beloved daughter of Antonio Gaytan and Delfina Rodriguez. Socorro had two sisters and three brothers, and she grew up enjoying life on the ranch. Her very name, Socorro, means “help” or “relief” in Spanish—a name she lived out daily through her selfless love, her care for others, and her unwavering devotion to God and family.At just 13 years old, she married Crescencio Mercado. Together, they had two wonderful children: a son, Martin Mercado, and a daughter, Maria de Rosario. Socorro and her husband worked hard and owned several businesses in Fresnillo. They ran a tortillería, a grocery store, and sold chili and cattle. Socorro was also a gifted entrepreneur. She became well known for her delicious tortas, raspados, gorditas, and tamales, which she cooked with joy and shared generously with her community. After her husband and his brother passed away in a tragic event, Socorro showed remarkable resilience. Though the storm of loss was heavy, she stood strong in her faith—finding strength not while standing on her feet, but on her knees before the Lord. In 1988, she made the brave decision to move to Los Angeles to follow her sister-in-law, Aurelia, who had also lost her husband. With uncommon courage, she faced a new country, language, and culture, determined to find a new beginning for herself and her family. In 1989, she brought her daughter-in-law, Esther Flores, and her grandchildren to Los Angeles. By 1990, the family settled in Pueblo, CO. Socorro and Esther shared a very special bond—so strong that many people thought Esther was her daughter. Wherever Socorro went, Esther and the kids were right there with her. They were a team, full of love and trust. Together, they raised a family of successful children and grandchildren, instilling in them both a deep faith in God and an entrepreneurial mindset. Faith was always the foundation, and from that strength came the courage to work hard, dream big, and build opportunities for future generations. To her grandchildren, Socorro was lovingly called “Madre,” and to her great-grandchildren, she was “Ama.” She gave them all a mother’s love that was deep and unconditional. More importantly, she passed on her greatest treasure—her relationship with God. Her uncommon strength and peace, drawn from her faith, became a living lesson she instilled in her family, teaching them how to lean on the Lord in every season of life. Socorro loved reading her Bible and spending time in prayer. She was known as a dedicated prayer warrior who faithfully lifted her family and friends before the Lord. She was a proud member of Casa de David New Destiny Church in Colorado, where she lived out her faith every day. She also had some favorite treats! She loved McDonald's, pizza, coffee, Pepsi, and of course, spicy jalapeños with her meals. But more than anything, she loved cooking for her family and being surrounded by loved ones during holidays and special gatherings. Even as she grew older, Socorro stayed strong and full of love. She knew her time on earth was coming to an end and began preparing her children with gentle words, encouragement, and motherly advice. She showed no fear—only peace, as she trusted in God’s perfect plan. Her final days were spent surrounded by the people who loved her most, including her devoted caregivers: Madeliene, Christine, Ana, Norma, Thalia, and of course, Esther. Socorro Gaytan lived a long, beautiful, and faithful life. She leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, and unwavering faith. She touched countless hearts and will always be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, friend, and woman of God—true to the meaning of her name, Socorro: a source of help, comfort, and blessing to everyone who knew her. Socorro tuvo dos hermanas y tres hermanos, y creció disfrutando la vida en el rancho. Su propio nombre, Socorro, significa “ayuda” o “consuelo” en español—un nombre que vivió cada día a través de su amor desinteresado, su cuidado por los demás y su inquebrantable devoción a Dios y a su familia.
